Custom Bunk Beds

Bunk beds and loft beds sized to the room, with guard rails, ladders or stairs, and storage built in.

Two beds in the space of one

Custom bunk beds make a shared bedroom work, or free up floor space under a raised bed for a desk or play area. Because they are made to the room, the beds can fit an alcove, run along a wall or include storage that a standard bunk bed cannot.

A shared bedroom changes as children grow, so it is worth thinking ahead. Stairs with drawers are easier and safer for younger children than a vertical ladder, while older children often want a desk under a loft bed. Some designs can later be separated into two single beds, which we can plan for at the drawing stage.

Safety comes first: guard rails, a secure ladder or stairs, and a frame fixed to suit the room. For single-level storage beds, see storage beds.

Bunk bed types

Custom bunk beds usually follow one of these layouts.

Custom made bunk beds in light wood, with a leaning ladder and a fixed guard rail

Classic bunk beds

One bed above the other, with a ladder or stairs. The most efficient use of floor space.

Built-in bunks

Beds built into an alcove or along a wall, with shelves and storage around them.

Safety and comfort

Guard rails

Guard rails on the upper bed, sized so the mattress does not sit above them.

Ladders and stairs

A ladder, or stairs with storage drawers in the steps, which are easier for younger children.

Headroom

Enough space above the top bunk to sit up, checked against the ceiling height.

Storage

Drawers under the lower bed and shelves at the side for books and lights.

Materials and finishes

Children’s furniture needs to be strong and easy to clean.

  • Solid timber. For frames, rails and slats that carry load.
  • Painted MDF. Smooth colour finishes for panels and stairs.
  • Laminate. Hard-wearing surfaces for drawers and shelves.
  • Rounded edges. Edges and corners are rounded where children climb and play.
