Some clients want a true library, with books on every wall and a comfortable chair. Others, however, need a study where children do homework, with a few shelves around a desk. Often, the room does both. So we plan the balance between shelving, seating and desk space first.

Why shelf depth and span matter

Books are heavy. If shelves span too far, they sag within a year or two. So we keep spans short, use thicker shelves where needed, and fix the whole unit firmly to the wall.

Depth matters as well. Most novels fit a shallow shelf, but large art books and files need more depth. We therefore mix shelf depths where your collection needs it, rather than make every shelf the same.

Finally, consider dust. Glass or solid doors on part of the shelving also protect older or valuable books.
