How people gather in a majlis
In most villas the majlis has its own entrance, so guests arrive without walking through the family’s private rooms. That one decision shapes everything else about the room: it is semi-public, it is formal, and it is expected to be ready at short notice.
Seating runs continuously around the walls rather than facing a table. There is no head of the table and no seat that outranks another by geometry — although guests are still seated by seniority, and everyone in the room understands the order. Sitting shoulder to shoulder rather than opposite each other changes the conversation: it is shared across the group instead of paired off.
Late afternoon is when a majlis fills. The tray passes around the wall, and the conversation settles into the long middle of the day. Nobody is in a hurry, and the room is doing the job it was designed for — holding a group of people comfortably enough that they stay.
Staircases, doors and panelling usually belong to the same joinery package, so where a house needs a new flight we detail the wooden staircases as part of the same scheme.
The coffee is the point
Arabic coffee is served by someone standing and moving around the room, not by guests helping themselves. The dallah is held in the left hand with the cups in the right, and it is refilled constantly — a cup left full is a cup nobody is attending to. A guest who has had enough tilts the cup, and the host moves on without comment.
Dates come with it, usually on the same tray. The ritual is brief, but it is not incidental. Because everyone is served in turn by the same person, the room is drawn into a single circle before any conversation starts. It is the mechanism by which strangers become a gathering.
Majlis design Dubai: a room that works at two scales
A majlis design Dubai project has to work at two scales. On an ordinary weekday there may be four people in the room; on the first day of Eid there may be forty. The same furniture has to hold both without looking empty in the first case or cramped in the second.
That drives real decisions in the build. Seat depth and back angle have to support someone sitting for three hours, not twenty minutes. Foam grade decides whether the cushions still look right after a year. Storage goes under the seating for the coffee equipment and the spare cushions, because there is nowhere else for it to live.
We also plan the wider majlis design Dubai details as one scheme — wall treatments, display niches and lighting — rather than adding them later. The seating run is set out so there are no awkward gaps at the corners. You can see finished rooms on our projects page, and the fabric side of the work under custom sofas and upholstery.
Majlis design Dubai: questions we get asked
Seating runs allow roughly 60cm per person, so the wall length tells us the capacity. Send us the lengths and we will work it out.
Yes. We design the seating to sit on it and protect it during installation.
Yes — including the bolsters and the fabric selection, which we do in-house so the seating and cushions match.
Usually, if you can show us the timber and the fabric.
