Staircase Renovation in Dubai

A staircase renovation changes the look of a home without rebuilding its structure. In most Dubai villas and townhouses, the stairs are concrete with tiles or marble on top. So we clad them in timber, replace tired handrails and put the space underneath to work. Because we make the parts in our own workshop, they fit your stairs exactly.

Stairs

Renovate or rebuild?

When a staircase renovation makes sense

If the structure is sound, there is rarely any need to rebuild it. A staircase renovation keeps the concrete and changes what you see and touch. As a result, there is less mess, less noise and no structural work.

A renovation suits stairs that:

  • have worn, chipped or dated tiles or marble
  • feel cold and hard underfoot
  • have a loose, low or dated handrail
  • waste the space underneath
  • clash with a new floor or kitchen

If you want a completely new staircase, however, see our wooden staircases page.

Scope

What a staircase renovation can include

Tread and riser cladding

Timber treads and risers fixed over the existing steps, including a nosing that suits the stair.

Handrails

A new timber handrail, shaped to sit comfortably in the hand and fixed securely.

Balustrades

Timber spindles or panels close the open side, so children and pets stay safe.

Under-stairs storage

Drawers, cupboards or a coat store. See under-stairs storage for ideas.

Wall panelling

Panelling up the stairwell protects the wall and also ties the stair to the room. See wall panelling.

Lighting

Step lights or a lit handrail make the stair safer at night, through our electrical works.

Getting it right

Safety and fit in a staircase renovation

Every step must be the same height. Cladding adds thickness, so we measure each step and plan the top and bottom carefully. Otherwise, the first or last step can end up higher than the rest, which is a common trip hazard.

Grip matters as well. Timber treads need a finish that is not slippery, especially in socks. Therefore, we choose finishes and nosings with that in mind.

Handrails must be strong and continuous. So we fix them into solid backing, and we check the height and spacing against the current rules.

Finally, the stair should match the floors it joins. If you are changing floors at the same time, we plan both together. Our tiling works page also covers tiled floors around the stair.

Process

How a staircase renovation runs

  1. Survey Initially, we measure every step, the landing and the walls.
  2. Design Then you choose timber, finish and handrail style.
  3. Workshop After that, we make the treads, risers and rails in Ras Al Khor.
  4. Preparation Before fitting, loose tiles are fixed or removed.
  5. Installation Next, our team fits the cladding and handrails.
  6. Handover Finally, we check every step and fixing with you.

Building work in Dubai follows the Dubai Building Code, alongside any rules your building or community sets.

Budget

What affects the cost of a staircase renovation

We price a staircase renovation after measuring it, because every stair is different. The main factors are:

  • the number of steps and landings
  • straight, curved or winding stairs
  • the timber species and finish
  • handrail and balustrade design
  • storage under the stairs

Straight stairs cost less than curved ones, because every curved tread is shaped individually. On the other hand, a new handrail alone can refresh a stair at a lower cost.

Before we visit, send photos of the whole staircase and a close-up of one step.

Questions

Staircase renovation FAQs

Can you put timber over marble or tile stairs?

Yes, if the steps are sound. We fix or remove any loose tiles first.

Will the stairs be out of use?

Partly, while each section is fitted. Because the parts are made in our workshop, the time on site is short.

Can you only replace the handrail?

Yes. A new handrail is a common job on its own.

Do you build new staircases too?

Yes. See wooden staircases.
